All About ScrewsOur chipboard Screws are suitable for all types of wood, hard, soft and man-made. They are case hardened for strength. Corrosion resistant. Pilot hole not required due to starter thread as standard. Compatible with Phillips 2 Drivers. Useful Information Case Hardening - The outer surface of the screw is processed to produce a tough outer coating that improves it's strength. The whole screw is not hardened as this would cause it to be brittle and snap. Shank - The unthreaded section below the head. Often found on longer length screws, this helps prevent soft wood from splitting and prevents timber jacking. Thread Types - The spiralled metal around the core. This must be angled to ease driving and also provides strength. Threads can be - Single: good on soft wood. Twin: Ensures speed and direction. Dual: Combines both the best features of the former. Core - This is the main body of the screw, it gives it strength. Countersunk - Lies flush or just below the surface. Roundhead - Rounded top which sit proud of the surface. Raised Head - Slightly rounded top which sits partly recessed. Pan Head - Shallow roundhead often used in electrical fixings. Bugle Head - Sides of head are curved and will lie flush with the surface.
